Happy Birthday Eli Part 2

These are older pictures from last week on Eli's actual birthday. We opened presents and had ice cream cake on his birthday, and his party was a week later. These are Eli's monster trucks.

Ok, so we spoiled him. There are a lot of presents here...

And this was Eli's birthday party yesterday. He wanted to the bowling alley, and so he did. Wow... chaos. All the kids seemed to have a good time, but trying to keep an eye on them when it wasn't their turn was a challenge. Luckily a few of the parents stuck around to help. And one of them even sounded interested in doing it for her sons party. There were a couple hang ups. At one point lane 1 shut off and we stood around waiting forever. The guy felt really bad so we got extra pizza and I need to call him back but I think he gave us a discount. I had a good time and would probably recommend it to others (with enough parental supervision). Especially for 4 yr olds. This a picture where they figured out that slipping and falling down was pretty funny. These 2 kids are from his daycare.

Overall a very successful if not stressful adventure. Eli had a great time and in the goody bags (the bowling alley put together) they gave us 1 hr free to go back and bowl. So Eli is already excited to go back. Of course, it'll just be the 4 of us and not all of his friends. Erin and Caleb came over after the party to hang out and visit. We ended up playing the Wii for a few hours. Anyway, so all is well. We had fun. :)

Prices

Looks like my rambling thoughts are getting the best of me.
I was talking to my neighbor last night about random things, but we got on the topic of money. Our husbands were out helping a family in our ward move. I guess they had a lot of stuff and much of it wasn't the best quality stuff (ie junk) that many of us would throw away. But they have many children and not much money, so they live with what they can afford. I absolutely respect that. But how are many of us supposed to make ends meet right now? It seems like even when you make enough money - its not enough.

I watch CNN or other news shows and see how prices of food and airline tickets and gas are skyrocketing and how retirement funds are dwindling... and people are losing their jobs and losing their homes etc. One in 11 people were behind on their mortgage last month. ONE IN ELEVEN!!!!!! That is huge. I just don't even know what to do with that. I know there are a bunch of people in my area who are losing their home, but what is the answer? Is there one? Have they just been negligent with their money OR have they chosen to buy food instead of pay the mortgage? And you have to buy gas at $4 a gallon because in order to keep your job to pay for either food or the mortgage you have to make money.

I was all excited this morning when I filled up my tank and calculated that I got 36 mpg. I think my little cheap car has found its niche. It likes driving a few miles around town and mostly freeway. But I still spend $250/month for just MY gas. Luckily my company is thinking about moving me up to Kaysville (if they hire a new manager) which would cut my commute by 80%. I was getting all excited about the prospect of having a little extra breathing room in the budget, but with all these other things constantly going up... like milk and bread something tells me that extra $200 isn't going anywhere. That is actually one report that I read. The average American is spending an extra $170/month to maintain their standard of living. So if you were to do the exact same things today as this time last year - you would spend $170 more. That is insanity. Who has an extra $170 in their budget???? And when you've already cut out all the extras, where do you go from there?

And forget vacations. Now that they are charging you for your bags (American and soon to follow United so I've heard) it could be an extra $280 for a family of 4. And when you have a family of 4, you need all the checked baggage because there are car seats and pack n plays and all kinds of stuff that you have to bring. The exact same tickets that I bought for our family back in January cost 27% more which equals about $325 for all 3 tickets. I guess I'm glad that I bought them when I did.

From where I am sitting, there is no answer. I'm just complaining. I'm done now

Doctor Appt

Eli had his 4 yr check up yesterday. He is doing great. 35 lbs and 38.75" tall. So I think we can officially rule out NBA as a career choice. (he was 20th percentile for height) But overall, he is doing well. I asked about the possibility of asthma and told the doctor things that I've noticed. I guess he is too young to do actual tests, so they just take my word on it for now. He pretty much said flat out - it sounds like asthma for sure. They gave me a spacer tube to use when he needs the medicine and a few refills. So we'll see. I've noticed that he hasn't had any bad fits for a while, but I still worry about him. At least we have something for him if he needs it.
Oh, and I did my monthly weight check on Nathan. Mr. 15lbs 9oz. :) At this rate he will be 20 lbs by a year! YEAH!!!!!! He has gained almost exactly a pound and a half every month since he lost weight at 5 months. Although to give you some perspective, Eli was that same weight at 6 months. So he is still a little behind - but catching up VERY quickly. I have another post to make about him, but I need a picture first. Stay tuned. ;)

Our Weekend

I think overall, I had a pretty good weekend. Not as busy as the weekend before with our trip to NE, but... well you know what I mean. Friday started off at work. I checked an old friend of mines Myspace page and found out that she had a baby. I literally grew up with Megan as we lived on the same street and went to school together. So I emailed her all excited and received an email back on Friday. Turns out her little baby boy has a heart defect and has had his first of 3 open heart surgeries. My own heart about stopped as I read his story. They have a website set up at www.natesheartfund.org
If you can spare some prayers, positive thoughts or donations, I'm sure Megan could really use them. Nathaniel is home now, but still struggling to eat and gain weight and he can't get sick at all for the next 6 months. I just try to imagine - what if this were my child. But then I have to stop because I cry too much. No one should have to go through this.
So I left work... since I wasn't getting very much done and picked up the kids. It was Eli's birthday, so we had to hurry home and open presents. I did spoil him, but in my defense, we only buy him gifts twice a year for his birthday and Christmas and we still had some leftover gifts from Christmas. Anyway, so he got a couple games (Whac-a-mole and Hungry Hungry hippos), a Ninja Turtle, transformer, 2 monster trucks, Lightning McQueen, and his bumblebee pajamas. Then his cousins came over for ice cream cake and they brought 2 more transformers! Thank you Canon (Sara) that was very unnecessary. But Eli loves them. So he had a great birthday.

The next day we got up and were able to go to Corinnes baptism. I can't believe she is 8 years old already!! That means that I've been with Chris almost as long. I think she was Nathans age when I first came to Saras house. Crazy how time has passed. She asked me to talk on baptism and then her Nana Sandy gave a talk on the Holy Ghost. Sandy used props, so her talk was much more entertaining. ;) Then we all went over to their house for lunch. I love just visiting with family.
Sunday was our lazy day, except that i was the only leader in nursery. oy. Not entirely anyones fault... There are supposed to be 3 of us, and the one knew she would be out of town so she called a sub. Sub never showed up. Then the other lady woke up sick, so she sent her teenage daughter in to help. Her husband stayed most of the time too, so it all worked out. It could have been worse I guess. Oh, and I made some yummy kabobs for dinner. The Taste of Home magazine for this month had some grilling recipes, so I wanted to try them. They had potatoes on there though, which I left out, but now I'm kind of curious... so I might make them again with the potatoes. Only problem is that Chris says the flame on our grill isn't working that great. I'm thinking it might be time for a new grill. We just bought a cheapy one 5 yrs ago... so we got some good use out of it. Who knows. We'll use it until its truly dead. :)

My Baby is 4 years old today!!!

He is growing up so fast. This morning he came into my room and I said "Happy Birthday Eli!" He rubs his eyes and looks down at his hand. He pulls out 4 fingers and asks... am I this many today? I said yes, and he pumps his fist and raises his knee and goes "YES!" Although I have days that I can't decide if he is 2 or 7yrs old. He just cracks me up. Its sad to think that he is going to be starting preschool in the fall. He's not big enough for that yet! But I think it'll help him. Just this morning we had his invitations for his party and he wanted to know which one was Alex's. So I asked him what the letters were, and he said A-L-E-X and then what sound each letter made... and I think it was probably the X that tipped him off, but he figured it out.

So in honor of Eli, I thought I would shed a little light on the boy who is my now 4yr old son.

Favorite Food: Mac n Cheese. This is what he wants for dinner tonight, but evidently the mac n cheese at our house is not good enough

Spontaneity at its best

I don't know what we were thinking, but we took a little road trip over the long weekend. Little... HA! We drove to Nebraska to see my sister and my parents. Its was "only" 1000 miles each way. Mapquest said 13 hours, but it was more like 14 when you make stops. It all started with a note that Chris left me Friday morning. It said that Nebraska was only 13 hours away and if I wanted to go see my parents and sister, we could go for the weekend. My sister just moved and my parents drove out to help her. Wow. So my head was spinning for most of the morning. I called my sister (and woke her up), called my Grandma for my moms cell #, called Chris to see what the heck he was thinking, and went to work thinking fun idea, but probably not.

While at work, I think I changed my mind about 50 times in the 5 hours I was there. I talked to Chris, and he was still upbeat and I thought - what the heck. I got the kids home in the afternoon thinking no, but for whatever reason I packed the kids and myself, and started gathering everything we would need, called the neighbor to feed the dog, etc. In the back of my mind I'm still thinking, no way. Chris got home, I talked to my sister, and ultimately just said yes. We left at like 6:30/7pm and drove almost the entire night. Almost 10 hours. We stopped in the middle of Nebraska, then got up and drove the last 4 hours. Then we got to spend Saturday afternoon/evening, Sunday, and Monday until 3pm with them. We got my sister mostly moved in. They have a few rooms set up, and many of the boxes put away. The big stuff is done, and now they have the forever task of sorting, and finding those little things that disappear. (Like the bookshelf pegs) They have a very nice house though. Huge basement. I am so jealous of their shelving. Its like food storage heaven.

It was such a nice trip. It would have been nice to not get in the car again, but even that wasn't all bad. Since we did 80% of it at night, the kids slept. I have amazing kids. Can I just say that?? Not once did Eli complain about sitting and little Nathan who I was convinced would scream for 1/2 the trip only cried when he had pooped or he was hungry. He would wake up crying for a minute, but then go back to sleep a few times - but that was it!!! I was and am still absolutely shocked. I think that made all the difference. On the way home, we just did it all in one trip. We didn't even bother stopping. We switched off several times so between that and a bit of caffeine, we got home at 5am. What a whirlwind. Chris has to be to work at 6pm tonight, and I hope he survives. My head hurts a little but at least I get to sleep. He has to work.

Anyway, overall I really enjoyed my trip. I am so thankful that Chris thought of it, and I was able to see my family. Ultimately the thought I had going through my head was... why wouldn't I take every opportunity for my kids to spend time with their grandparents. I hadn't seen my dad in like 2 years, and yes we'll see them in July, but its only for a few days. We try to do a set of grandparents each year, but its hard. Once every other year is a lifetime to these kids. Literally. I think we just need to take opportunities when they arise, and make the best of it. It wasn't the most ideal trip because it was so short, but every little bit counts. It may be a year before I get in a car again, but I know we can do it now.

I think it eased my mind about road trips too. Not that I would want to do them often, but they won't be out of the question. I think you always get nervous about your kids and how they'll react but Eli is getting older and he is entertaining Nathan more and more. I think next time I might like to wait until Nathan is a bit older and can join Eli in his videos, snacks and games. I think there were a few points where he was just bored.

So I did bring my camera but of course didn't break it out until the last few hours that we were there. Oh well. I didn't get any great ones, but I got a bunch of the babies. We'll have to get good ones of Grandma, Grandpa and the kids, and mom and dad with the kids and the more formal ones over the family reunion in July.

Trip to the park. This was both Nathans and Cecelias first time on the swings. Nathan was a little tired, but the swing just dwarfed him. I don't think it helps that he was slouching. Like mother like son?? I hope not. Compared to Cecelia, Nathan is the most expressionless little boy on the planet. He just sits there with his observing gaze. No smiles, no yells, just observes. The swings were no different.

And poor Eli. He was off digging in the sand with Grandma with this tractor arms thing, but my camera died before I could make it over to him. I love you Eli! Don't be mad that there are no pictures.

Time for a Scavenger Hunt

Unfortunately not the fun kind. I've got to hunt down Elis birthday toys that I hid when we moved all the furniture. I'm missing his Ninja Turtle action figure, his little Superman car and the Bumblebee pajamas. :( very important things... I took him to the store today because I wanted to see if he really didn't want a bike (he keeps saying not) and after he got on one for 5 minutes, he still doesn't. Works for me! He can wait until next summer. We looked through some of the action figure aisles and he found things that he couldn't live without (of course) and luckily we have already bought the couple things that he wants. YEAH! Guess we're about done then. Now if I can just find that stupid bag of stuff!!!
And any of Elis friends that are reading this... Hannah, Canon, Jeffrey, Cole, Autumn and Bailey - mark your calendars! Saturday June 7th from 11-1 (or 1:30) will be Elis birthday party. We'll send out invites next week. He is so excited to go bowling. Its almost funny. I hope I'm not too redneck for going to a bowling alley for my sons birthday, but that's really where he WANTS to go. I have no excuse except that I'm a mom. This year, at least, I'm giving him what he wants. There will be many more years of disappointment I'm sure. LOL.
Well wish me luck. I've already searched my hiding spots, so I might be tearing things off shelves in order to find his toys.... lucky me

Garage Sale Enjoyment

...I guess. It was actually pretty fun. It was very freeing getting rid of so much stuff. We sold our desk, couches, cabinet, the dyson, the swing, and a bunch of other little things. Don't get me wrong, we still have a ton of stuff left, but the big things we'll sell online and the little stuff went to DI. Our garage is not clean yet, but it is on its way. Its much better than it was last night - thats for sure.
We had 2 neighbors who joined us and they had some fun things to sell. The LoveSac was one of the first things to go. ;) One of my neighbors has 2 girls and she brought a lot of girl toys, but they went pretty fast. I had to laugh at the people who said 'if you only had girl clothes/toys'... because there were several. I guess people who 'garage sale' have girls. who knew?? LOL!

Now that we're done, and I've had a chance to decompress, I am exhausted and don't feel great. Not that I'm sick or anything, but I think I was all go-go-go, and then I stopped and can't get back up again. I hit a serious wall. Hopefully I get over that quickly because I have a ton of stuff to clean up before Monday. The fun never ends.

Sniff Sniff

Well he is officially done. Nathan quit nursing. He didn't want to eat yesterday and then today I didn't even offer. ::sigh:: This happened too fast! I nursed Eli WAY longer, so I wasn't expecting it to end so soon. We've had quite the journey over the last 7 1/2 months.
Nathan and I started off on shaky ground as he had me bleeding for the first few weeks, but then I remembered how it should be done and he figured it out too. It was great until about 4 months when all of a sudden he wouldn't eat as long. I figured that was normal and he was just more efficient, but he lost weight - so we started supplementing with formula. Well this little guy DEFINITELY enjoys the bottle, so he weaned pretty quickly and we were down to just morning and night. We kept that up for almost 2 1/2 months, but alas... he has decided that there will be no more. I knew it was coming, but kind of hoped it would be a couple more months.
So now I'm sad, but quickly remembering when I quit with Eli... I gained 10 lbs (I know - selfish thinking huh...) ;) Seeing as how I'm already a little more than I would like, I need to watch it. I don't know which I'm more sad about. Not nursing Nathan or the fact that I don't get any more late night snacks... sniff sniff

Part 4 - Miscellaneous love

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!!!!! I am having a very nice Mothers Day. Nathan woke up at quarter to 6, but he went back to sleep around 7:30 and so did I. Woke up just in time to get ready for church. (Thanks Chris for taking care of Eli) Then I came down and had all this waiting for me!

I got 2 drawings from Eli, and card from Chris and I got the movie Enchanted! I love that movie!!! I think I work with that girl though. She is the happiest, smiliest, person I have ever met. And I'm so proud of Eli for writing "I love you" I don't know if you can quite tell, but I can! I can't believe he'll be in preschool this fall. :( He is growing up way too fast. I got a flower at church, and Eli gave his first talk in Primary. It was actually just a spotlight and he told about himself. He said that he loves his family and Nathan is his best friend, he likes to play outside and ride his bike, that Superman is his favorite superhero and he loves Jesus and knows that Jesus will help him live again after he dies. He did great. He wasn't scared or anything! I'm so proud of my big boy.

Chris is going to make dinner tonight. The chicken is marinating and he said he would grill! Yum!! I love grilling season. It means I get a break from cooking once a week. And lately... I have needed it.
So I think that is all my updates. Here are just some random pictures from the last couple weeks.

Part 3 - IKEA

Adventures in IKEA. ;) Thanks Meredith for going with me. Couldn't have done it without you. I spent WAY too much, but had no idea what to expect since it was my first trip. I knew I was going for a desk (since we are selling that large one next to the dining table in the last post) but I came away with a new desk chair, a bookshelf, 4 patio chairs, and a picnic table plus a few extra small things. I have the bookshelf, chair and picnic table put together and my fingers hurt so I'm taking a break and will put the desk together tomorrow. Meredith was able to find the dresser she has been wanting (on clearance) in perfect condition. It was the floor model and had no scratches or anything - but they couldn't hold it for us, and it was put together, so it was large. Let me tell you how much fun we had fitting it into the Pathfinder! LOL! It was fun. She had my patio chairs sticking out of her trunk... we were a sight to see. I think the IKEA guy who was helping us load thought we were insane.
I have to admit, I've been pleasantly surprised. Maybe I'm just too used to Walmart furniture, but IKEA seems to help you out a little. They give you little wrenches when you need it, their instructions are easy, and my bookshelf came with a strap to mount it to the wall. I thought that was great. You definitely get what you pay for. If you're willing to spend a little extra for the real stuff instead of the particle board version... its really not bad quality.
Here is a picture of the picnic table. I think this may have turned out to be my favorite purchase... ;) It still needs to be stained/protected, but I think its pretty nice.


Here is my pretty bookshelf. It fits perfectly in my little corner. The chair that I got is also there.
This bench is one that Chris bought the week before. It has a shelf that you put above it for coats and backpacks, but i haven't put that one together either. Its also not staying here in the living room, but will go by the front door

Part 2 - The House

Well we are almost 2 weeks after our new carpet. Whoa... 2 weeks. So why does our house look like such a mess still???? Well in our defense, we have been very busy lately. We are also going through everything that gets put back for our garage sale next Saturday. I've noticed that we're selling a lot of big stuff, but very few knick knack things that you find at most garage sales. Must be because I don't own a lot of knick knacks and definitely don't have a surplus of kitchen utensils/appliances. Oh well.
To give you an idea of where we were at 2 weeks ago, here are the pictures I took...

This was taken today. Yes, its a picture of Eli, but you can see where our dining table is... yikes. We would have moved it back last weekend, but a nice hornet/wasp nest moved in. So after all the pesticide, we thought it best to leave it out there a bit longer to air it out. We've come a long way from where we were in the previous 3 pictures, but still have a bit to go. The garage sale is on Saturday - so we have a deadline!!!

Part 1 - Nathan

Just to update you from my last post. Nathan is doing better. The doctor had no idea what was wrong with him, and we chalked it up to constipation. We have been giving him some pear juice and feeding him prunes but while it cleared him out, it didn't seem to help him eat more. Talking to my Grandma tonight, she mentioned how babies just know when too much is happening. We've been crazy lately, and maybe this was his manifestation of he had had enough. Who knows. He is eating now (and maybe even a little more than usual) so it makes me feel much better.

Up or down...

I just don't know what to think about my poor little baby. I took him for a weight check on Friday, and he was 14 LBS 1 OZ!!! That was amazing news. He still hasn't quite doubled his birth weight, but we're a lot closer. He gained almost a pound and a half in a month. So that was great. But ever since Saturday, I haven't been able to get him to eat. He has eaten an average of 10oz a day since Saturday afternoon. His mood is great, he isn't fussy, he is sleeping fine... just not interested in eating. I'm taking him in to the doctor this afternoon, so hopefully we can get this resolved. I just have this horrible image of my little 7 month old in the hospital for dehydration or something. I'm just nervous. Please pray for him that everything will be ok.

Other than that, not too much going on. Nothing has changed on the home front. Chris is still working on the baseboards to get them finished up and after that we will really start moving everything back. We're having a garage sale in a week and a half to get rid of all our junk. So if anyone wants to come on up and join in - let me know!! Multi-family sales are much more of a draw than single. :) I'm hoping to start getting rid of some of our baby stuff too. Should be fun, and if anything it gives me a deadline of going through all our stuff. Well, I better get back to work. I'll try to take some pictures... our computer is set up off the edge of our couch at the moment, so its an interesting set up.

I'm alive

...barely. First off, I will say that I LOVE the new carpet. Its just slow going to resume normal life. Still no computer set up in the house, but we're getting there. Our living room and downstairs bedroom are done, Nathans room has all the furniture back in, our room has the bed and 2 nightstands, the family room has a couch and the tv - but nothing else... so we're slowly coming along. We got to putting our brown couches back and getting ready to put the blue ones back downstairs - and Chris says that he doesn't want to put them back. Well, to make the long conversation short, we bought a leather sofa yesterday. Its 2/3 of a sectional, so it has arms on both sides, but its 2 pieces that meet in the middle. Essentially its one LONG couch. We were going to do a chair on the side, but came to the conclusion that it would be best to let the kids have the entire corner for toys. Works for me!
Anyone want a pair of free blue corduroy stained couches with no legs? LOL! Chris wants to put them on KSL for a week or two and see if anyone wants them before we take them to the dump.
Anyway, work is insane. The ONE thing that I had to get done today I haven't even touched. I am going to bring it home tonight, but we're going to Savior of the World (a play that my stake is putting on) Its the same as what they did at the conference center for Christmas. A few of the cast members live in my stake, and they are directing it. So that is going on tonight which doesn't leave much room for me to get my work done. Oh well. Such is life - right? You make do.
Well once we get a little bit more done, I will take some pictures of the house. Its kind of fun. We have a unique opportunity to have lived in a house for 5 years, and now we get to redo it! Kind of do it the way we would have liked to do it 5 years ago but couldn't. I'm looking forward to going through all my junk and hopefully getting RID OF most of it. Its nice too because everything has to have a place when you put it back. So if it doesn't have a place - it gets tossed. Why do I think this process is going to take a month? I don't know.
